ABC’s Young Professionals Committee Joins Elves and More
When an Elves and More volunteer walks into NRG Stadium, all they can see are countless rows of newly-built bicycles that it’s a wonder how none of them receive a little “test ride”.
About 30 ABC Greater Houston’s Young Professional Committee members spent their Thursday evening building bikes in association with the Elves and More, a non-profit whose mission is to give bikes to at-risk children. These children sign a contract with their teacher to improve their literacy and maintain good behavior. And in return, they will receive a brand new bicycle. It’s a great holiday for many of these children! Thursday was the non-profit’s final night of building, and volunteers were given the task to build 300 bikes in a mere 3 hours. Each volunteer is handing a box with everything they need, tools and instructions. But after the bike is built, it’s a little taboo to ride it.
Executive Director Rebecca L.B. Roberts asked the question, “As a child, how would you feel if someone else rode your bike?” She asked how would we feel if we received a ‘used’ bike if we were a kid. Especially after all of that hard work, she made her point.
The atmosphere of the room felt fast-paced and competitive, with each person trying to complete their bikes in a timely manner. The job is as simple as turning a wrench, but mistakes can still be made – even by a team of construction professionals. That is why they have ‘quality assurance’ volunteers to check over the builders’ work. One Young Professional volunteer claimed to have completed a total of 10 bikes!
ABC would like to thank Elves and More for their dedication to the Houston community and for letting our volunteers participate in such a worthy cause.
