HOUSTON – Associated Builders and Contractors of Greater Houston (ABC), an association representing the interests of merit shop contractors and their employees, is pleased to announce that applications for the annual ABC Scholarship Foundation are now being accepted. Offered to college students pursuing a career in construction, the scholarships available are just some of the many ways ABC Greater Houston supports education and workforce development.

“Being a first-generation college student in line to graduate, the ABC Scholarship has been an immense motivator for me to advance in the completion of my Construction Management degree,” said Emilia Gonzalez, construction management student at University of Houston and 2020 Bob Taylor Memorial ABC Scholarship Winner. “Thank you for supporting and providing me with funds to reach my fullest potential and enable me to focus on my academic studies with financial ease. This has allowed me to accomplish being the first in my family to attain a four-year degree.”

“I chose construction science as my degree because I have always enjoyed building, and I wanted to learn more about how to manage large projects,” said Garrison Gibbs, construction science major at Texas A&M University and 2018 ABC Scholarship Winner. “The ABC scholarship allowed me to worry less about the overwhelming financial aspect of college, and more about getting as much as possible out of it as I can.”

To qualify for the ABC Scholarship, a candidate must be enrolled as an undergraduate student at a university or community college at the time of application. In addition, candidates are asked to provide two reference letters, transcript, copy of degree plan, and a typed essay.

“The kindness and support of ABC granting me this scholarship eased my financial burdens and gave me the confidence to push forward and excel in my classes,” said Hunter VanSchoubroek, construction science student at Texas A&M University and 2020 Bill Brown Memorial ABC Scholarship Winner.

Applicants must meet certain criteria found in the scholarship application and be a full-time student with a grade point average of 2.75 or higher. Following submission, applications will be evaluated by the ABC Greater Houston Chapter Scholarship Committee. The association will be awarding $22,500 in 2021 to students pursuing a degree in a construction field. The deadline to submit all applications and supporting documents is March 1, 2021.
