HOUSTON – Associated Builders and Contractors of Greater Houston (ABC) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2018 ABC Scholarship Foundation. The memorial scholarships honor the memory and contributions of past members including Bill Brown, Phil Coplen, Jim Gaudet, Michael Moore, and most recently Bob Taylor.
Offered to college students pursuing a career in construction, the scholarships awarded are just some of the ways ABC Greater Houston supports education and workforce development. To qualify for an ABC Scholarship, a candidate must be enrolled as an undergraduate student at a university or community college at the time of application. In addition, candidates are asked to provide two reference letters, academic transcript, a copy of degree plan, and a typed essay.
“I chose construction science as my degree because I have always enjoyed building, and I wanted to learn more about how to manage large projects,” said Garrison Gibbs, construction science major at Texas A&M University. “After graduating, I intend to find a mid-sized commercial construction company in Texas to work for as a superintendent. The ABC scholarship has allowed me to worry less about the overwhelming financial aspect of college, and more about getting as much as possible out of it as I can.”
“My dad works in construction, so I grew up on jobsites,” said Mauricio Rivera, a recent graduate from The University of Houston with a degree in construction management. “I always knew I wanted to do something in construction, and when I found out about the construction management program at the University of Houston, I was very excited because I didn’t want to study engineering or architecture. I knew I didn’t want to design buildings, I wanted to build.”
The winners were recognized at the ABC Membership Breakfast at Houston Marriott Westchase on May 11, and were presented with a certificate and scholarship amount to commemorate their accomplishment. ABC Greater Houston provided eight scholarships totaling $20,000.
